Vienna is the world capital of music: From the New Year’s Concert to the Danube Island Festival, from classical to the sound of today.
Experience Mozart in Vienna: In his footsteps at original surroundings and in worlds of adventure like Mozarthaus Vienna, Mythos Mozart, and House of Music. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is the most famous musical genius of all time. Between the baroque era and the age of revolution, the prodigy spent his most creative and successful years in Vienna. Many Viennese attractions are also historic Mozart locations.
Vienna was the focal point of Ludwig van Beethoven’s life for more than 35 years. The traces of the composer are manifold: from a large Beethoven Museum, homes and memorials, places of his triumph and doubt, monuments and Klimt’s Beethoven Frieze through to the Beethoven wine tavern.
Born in Bonn in 1770, Beethoven was 17 years old when he first traveled to Vienna to study under Mozart. Yet scarcely had he arrived when he had to return to be by his mother’s deathbed. Aged 22, he returned to Vienna again, this time as the pupil of Joseph Haydn – Mozart had died in the meantime. This time, he stayed forever: for 35 years until his death in 1827.
The Large Musikverein Hall, also called the “Golden Hall”, is famous for its sumptuous decor. Apollo and the muses draw the eye to the ceiling, while the columns are designed as female figures of the ancient world. As incomparable as the look are the spatial acoustics – the sound experiences here are unique in the world. The New Year’s Concert by the Vienna Philharmonic is broadcast to an international TV audience of millions from the Golden Hall each year. The Musikverein offers first-class concerts on the other 364 days of the year as well. With Vienna’s leading orchestras: the Vienna Philharmonic, the Wiener Symphoniker, and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra. International top stars are regular guests here; for the pianist Yuja Wang, the Musikverein is, if you will, an inseparable part of Vienna as the city of music. However, the Musikverein Wien has long since ceased to be only a temple of classical music.
If you are looking for a place to take a break in the center of Vienna, you can visit one of the beautiful inner-city parks at any time. It’s well worth it: Finally, around 400 types of rose in full bloom await you in the spring in the Volksgarten alone.
